U2 at the BBC

February, 2009 – BBC

U2 were special guests at BBC Radio as the audience enjoyed a live performance and access to one of the world’s greatest rock bands.

On BBC Radio 2, Chris Evans played host to U2 on his drivetime show at 5pm, interviewing all four members of U2. The band then took to the roof of the BBC’s Broadcasting House in central London for a surprise gig to fans. The band performed four tracks during the gig, including new songs Get On Your Boots and Magnificent. They also performed Beautiful Day and Vertigo. A crowd of around 5,000 watched the rooftop show, on a day of promotion for the Irish band’s 12th studio album ‘No Line On The Horizon’.

As the visual and Interactive TV designer on this project I was responsible for the creation and delivery of the required broadcast graphics for each platform with the number of streams available.

U2 at the BBC utilised the BBC ‘Red Button’ service with Satellite and Cable viewers able press the red button to watch them play live. Highlights of the live performance were then shown on the red button service.

The design of all ITV products also had to be consistent with the existing ‘Magnificent’ branding from their new album and complement online and broadcast ident graphics.
